Statement of Purpose
Candidate for MA in Museum Studies
Having completed my undergraduate studies in English and American Literature with a concentration in the Humanities in conjunction with my professional experience wherein my dedication to the preservation and promotion of the arts is evident, I now wish to focus on graduate work in Museum Studies.
Working for a private collector within a large financial securities firm, I cultivated my ability to appreciate art outside of my personal aesthetic and developed an ability to determine quality work from a variety of genres that I am not personally drawn to. This furthers my ability to work for collectors, dealers, museums and businesses in many different arenas.
When I began my career at Raymond James Financial, I took the position of Art Coordinator: working thirty hours a week supporting the efforts of Collection Curator, Emily Burts in managing The Tom and Mary James/Raymond James Financial Art Collection. I was then promoted to full time status as Tour Coordinator for the Collection. I began working with Ms. Burts to restructure the new position offered to me. Together we created the title of Art Administrator and Tour Coordinator wherein I managed the collection in addition to coordinating tours for upwards of four thousand guests per year.
The Collection consists of more than two thousand pieces, produced by more than 800 artists. Mr. James collects only from living artists; this allows me to be aware of the current evolving art market and cognizant of market trends and good purchasing strategies. During my tenure as Art Administrator it was necessary for me to learn and restructure most of the artist files and collection history as well as mastering Collector Systems, the new database was implemented once I was hired. I researched the artists in the Collection as well as wrote and prepared the collection labels and artist biographies. I curated the exhibitions and auctions of the Tom and Mary James/Raymond James Financial Art Collection on and off site, managing the transportation, insurance, installation, and aesthetic aspects of the events. I completed projects in preparing the Collection for a possible museum space which involved researching and incorporating museum standards for the Collection. I established and executed monthly cleaning and condition reporting of the works.
I streamlined our tour booking and coordinating process to include speaking regularly to Raymond James Advisors and clients regarding our services, in order to use the Art Collection as a public relations opportunity for the company. In doing this, I acted as a liaison for the company. I also prepared invitations and collection materials for art related client events. Moreover, I employed the collection to benefit not only the company, but the community as a whole.
In addition to my position at Raymond James, I've been immersed in the Tampa Bay art scene for nearly ten years. I've sat as Co-Chair for the Volunteer Committee of Gasparilla Festival of the Arts for three years, filling positions with better than ninety percent consistency.
Working with Youth Art Corps, I have taken my students on field trips to local museums and galleries, with the intention of exposing them to all that the community has to offer. More pertinent however, is my desire to foster inspiration within my students' own art work.
Working with Raymond James Financial and Youth Art Corps, I solely contrived and developed a program in which six students from Youth Art Corps were chosen based on their merit and dedication to the arts. Each student was to produce a work that emulated the style and genre of two artists featured in the Tom and Mary James/Raymond James Financial Art Collection. I worked diligently with each student to ensure proper research and technique was advanced. The works will be premiered at The Tenth Annual Wildlife and Western Visions Art Show. The professional artists donated a portion of the proceeds of their paintings to Youth Art Corps, wherein the allocation of the funds within the Youth Art Corps programming was determined by a grant written by the participating students. I oversaw and provided guidance during this process.
In coordination with the Salvador Dali museum I have worked for Youth Art Corps in implementing a program in which teen responses to the permanent collection were recorded and edited by the students. These responses will be used on http://www.salvadordalimuseum.org/home.html. A "teen-specific" audio tour based on these responses is forthcoming for the museum's future location.
Working within the world of Art Administration and Museum Studies is a more than perfect fit for my ardent dedication to the preservation and promotion of the arts. Continuing my education at New York University will assist me in developing a valuable place and career in this field. I implore the University to allow me the opportunity to challenge myself within this capacity.
